Workforce safety and security is top of mind for corporate leadership today. Protecting employees from everyday occurrences such as slips and falls in the office or personnel tailgating through an access point to higher threat situations such as active shooter or employee relation situations represent current challenges that face corporate security and health, safety and environmental (HSE) leadership every day. HTX Labs was conceived from the start to harness emerging technology – specifically, virtual reality – to offer training simulations that can provide a safe and secure learning environment to more effectively train our workforce.
Our initial training program, Survival Mindset™, provides immersive training experiences for Active Shooter Preparedness and Fire Safety Preparedness. Our Active Shooter course is based on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Run-Hide-Fight curriculum and was developed with the Houston Police Department’s liaison to the DHS. Our Fire Safety Preparedness course, which teaches participants the critical elements to survive a structure fire in a corporate office, was developed in collaboration with the Houston Fire Department.
While we fully appreciate the corporate sensitivities to topics such as an active shooter, it is a moral imperative that we collectively do what we can to provide employees with a safe, yet meaningful, learning experience to heighten their situational awareness in the workplace and within our communities.
Virtual Reality provides a unique medium to condition employees to deescalate a challenging employee relations situation or, heaven forbid, survive an active shooter or workplace violence situation. SImilarly, virtual reality can be employed to perform virtual fire drills or practice the methods necessary to survive a structure fire in the workplace.
Our Active Shooter Preparedness course is based on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Run-Hide-Fight curriculum and was developed in collaboration with the Houston Police Department’s liaison to the DHS. This course includes a tutorial to instruct the user on basic VR mechanics as well as individual scenarios to condition users on the best option to Run, Hide or Fight if you find yourself in an active shooter situation.
Our Fire Safety Preparedness course was developed in collaboration with the Houston Fire Department and includes several scenarios to instruct participants on ways to survive a structure fire in a corporate office. The course includes an orientation scenario that allows a participant to familiarize themselves with items that would be relevant in the event of a structure fire in a corporate office.
The course also includes the following scenarios:
Immersive technology allows you to take ownership of your learning. It offers a highly flexible environment via a head-mounted display (HMD) and commercial software to practice and perfect processes at your own pace. At the same time, you’ll gain firsthand experience, and commit to memory the steps required for optimal performance.
